Back in 2003, the only language Ireland-born Benny Lewis knew was English. After graduating with a degree in engineering, he moved to Spain and decided to learn the local language. Now over 10 years on, Benny has traveled to all four corners of the world–from Thailand, China and Egypt to the hinterlands of Brazil–studied well over 12 languages, and blogged about his experiences on his award-winning website, Fluent in 3 Months. Nicknamed the “Irish Polyglot,” Benny sees language learning as a means to an end: that of communicating with interesting people from all parts of the world and making travel an enriching experience. In 2013, Benny was crowned “Traveler of the Year” by National Geographic.

The Canada-China Friendship Society is pleased to welcome Benny Lewis to Ottawa on July 25 2014. Benny will talk about his experience living and traveling in Taiwan and China, as well as learning Mandarin Chinese intensively over the period of a few months.

From learning Kung Fu with a local master in a Chinese farming village, to traveling thousands of kilometers across the Middle Kingdom by train, Benny will share his interesting experiences discovering China, its people, and its culture. On the way, he will also share his passion and tips for language learning, and he’ll tell you a bit more about his newly-released international best-seller, Fluent in 3 Months.
