Fatima El-Issawi, a senior lecturer in Journalism at the University of Essex will vist Carleton University on Tuesday, Oct. 17 to talk about her research on the relationship between Arab traditional national media and the political sphere within the context of the political change in the Arab world enabled by recent popular uprisings. The research generated original empirical data from journalists and media stakeholders in five countries in North Africa (Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Algeria) on the intricate link between news media and politics in a transition to a democratic rule. Her book, Arab National Media and Political Change details journalists’ perceptions of their role as watchdogs of democracy in the Arab uprisings. You can hear Fatima El-Issawi at an event being hosted by the School of Journalism and Communication.
