Bio:

Chantal Trudel is a graduate of Carleton University’s School of Industrial Design, has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Ottawa and a master’s degree in ergonomics from the University of Nottingham. In 2002, Chantal began her career in consumer/corporate product design and architectural interiors, and later specialized in health-care planning and design. It was this later work, in particular, that fueled her interest in understanding the challenges people face working in complex socio-technical organizations and how design responds to such challenges. During this time, Chantal also gained a great appreciation for working on interdisciplinary teams to achieve a better understanding of relationships and interactions among people, processes, objects and the greater context within such systems – something she continues to pursue in her academic work. Chantal’s research interests are focused on the role design and human factors contributes to our understanding of complex systems to help inform strategies that support well-being, health, safety, access, acceptance and performance. Chantal’s work has been featured in Canadian Interiors (September/October 2006 issue) for the design of McClelland and Stewart’s office (B+H Architects). In 2010, she received the Canadian Architect Award of Excellence for her work on the Women and Newborn Hospital in Winnipeg Manitoba (Parkin Architects in association with Architecture 49) and a high commendation for the same project from the International Academy for Design and Health in the International Future Health Project Category in 2012.
